Former Ipswich Town striker Macauley Bonne smashed his BMW into a wall and parked car last week, as the Gillingham manager assured the crash was a 'pure accident'.

A video shared on social media shows Bonne, who was born and raised in Ipswich, crashing in Woodlands Road in Gillingham while driving his teammates to a training session.

Gillingham manager Neil Harris addressed the crash, saying: "It is a real shame and firstly the players are okay. That is the main thing.

"I have seen the video clip, where it doesn't look great, that he's lost control, but having spoken to eye witnesses myself and police and all the players involved, the problem was the car, not the driver, which is pleasing for me to be able to say."

He added: "However, it is just a reminder to all of us that we have to be careful and make sure we look after our community as well.

"I reminded the players of that, but everyone is safe and it was just a pure accident."

Bonne was born and raised in Ipswich, went to Chantry High School and played on loan for Ipswich Town Football Club in the 2021/22 season.

He played 46 games, scoring 12 goals and getting three assists during his time at the club.

In an exclusive interview with the EADT and Ipswich Star last year, he said he had "unfinished business" at the Blues, but joined Gillingham Football Club in the summer.

Bonne still attends Town matches and was part of the crowd in the FanZone at Portman Road for the final game of the season last year against Fleetwood.

Kent Police attended the scene of the crash and reported that there were no injuries.
