An inquest into the death of a cyclist killed in Ipswich last year has been suspended until February, pending a criminal trial. 

Benjamin Wright, 35, was killed at the scene of a crash in Vernon Street, south of Stoke Bridge near the Waterfront, on October 13 last year. 

Suffolk Coroners' Court in Ipswich heard on Friday that Mr Wright was riding a pedal bike down the road when he was struck by a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Wright was thrown from his bicycle, into the path of a second car. He died from his injuries at the scene of the crash.

The court heard that the driver of the first car initially fled but was later apprehended and arrested.

On October 11 this year, James Ashman, 28 and of Lower Harlings in Shotley Gate, appeared at Suffolk Magistrates' Court in Ipswich. 

He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, as well as being charged with failing to stop after a road accident and failing to report a road accident.  

Ashman was granted bail pending a next hearing at Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, November 22.  

A second man, then aged 25, was arrested in connection with the incident on October 14 last year and was released under investigation but will face no further police action at this time. 

Senior coroner for Suffolk Nigel Parsley suspended the inquest into Mr Wright’s death until February 1, pending the conclusion of the criminal investigation and potential trial.
