Works on two key Ipswich roads have been postponed and a shorter phase of work will take place this month.

Two months of roadworks in Duke Street and Fore Street, which were scheduled to be carried out from July, have been delayed.

Instead, three weeks of roadworks will now take place from Monday, July 8.

A road closure will be in place along Duke Street from University Avenue to the junction of Fore Street during this time.

A spokesman for Caden has confirmed that the second phase of the work will now be postponed until a later date.

They say this decision has been made to alleviate traffic through the town during the summer months.

The works, which Cadent started in June 2023, involve replacing around 1.7km of existing metallic pipes in the area.

The focus of work had been on Duke Street and Fore Street from Orwell Place to Wykes Bishop Street and along Patteson Road.

Paul Angel, mains replacement manager at Cadent, said: “First and foremost, I want to thank the residents of Ipswich for all their patience and understanding as we completed the first phase of work that was associated with this job.

“We faced a fair few engineering challenges along the way, but new pipes have been introduced and we are delighted to say that the network is safe and secure.

“We will, of course, be carrying out regular inspections of the network to ensure gas remains flowing safely, but this decision means that the need for further roadworks in Ipswich has been alleviated as we approach the summer months.

“The decision will also allow us to focus on other areas within Suffolk.”
