Plans have been submitted to make improvements to seven roundabouts on the A12 in a bid to reduce accidents and decrease congestion.

WSP UK on behalf of Suffolk County Council has set out a number of changes the council would like to make along a stretch of the major route between Ipswich and Melton.

If approved the work on the road will commence in mid-2025 with the hopes of being fully operational by 2027.

These changes are being proposed as a result of growing demand to use the A12 from the 2,000 new homes at Brightwell Lakes, housing and employment growth in the area and traffic associated with Sizewell C.

The plans include improvements to seven roundabouts in Ipswich, Martlesham and Woodbridge, as well as a number of minor roads and single-carriageway sections that would be expanded to dual-carriageways.

The plans also set out the creation of a mobility hub at Martlesham which will help provide improvements for pedestrians and cyclists using the route.

The application says these improvements will help reduce the overall number and severity of casualties associated with the A12.

It also states that the changes will help improve connectivity between ports and towns, reduce congestion and reduce transport costs for businesses.

In the planning statement, WSP UK said: "The Proposed Scheme aims to promote sustainable modes of transport (walking, cycling and passenger transport) that encourage modal shift and reduce traffic on the A12.

"The Proposed Scheme proposes to improve the performance of the route for vehicles, to mitigate congestion and environmental impacts, alongside addressing issues of severance and road safety."
