An academy in Ipswich has retained its rating by Ofsted, with inspectors finding that changes brought in since Covid have helped pupils at the school.

Following an inspection in June, Westbourne Academy in the north-west of Ipswich has retained its 'good' rating once again, despite rating as 'requires improvement' in one of the categories.

The Marlow Road school, which is part of the Academy Transformation Trust, was found to need improvements with the behaviour and attitudes area, but all other categories were seen to be good by inspectors from the education watchdog.

Ofsted praised the changes made by the Academy Transformation Trust since the Covid lockdowns several years ago.

In the report, inspectors said: "Since returing from Covid, pupils have experienced a period of turbulence.

"During this time, their learning was disrupted by poor behaviour, which included not attending lessons.

"However, pupils value the new clear expectations and consequences trust leaders have brought in to address this."

They noted their experience at the school is "rapidly changing to be more positive" and pupils learn without disruption and missed lessons are rare.

The school's curriculum was also praised, with pupils covering the "full range of national curriculum subjects".

Inspectors also found that leaders implemented an effective programme of training and support to raise the standards of teaching.

The report also states that the school has put in place an effective and coherent approach to promoting personal development, and pupils learn about how to stay safe in relation to risk, including gangs and knife crime.

Ofsted did note, however, that the school has not ensured that some pupils behave well enough around the school site, finding some pupils were "not respectful enough" or do not take responsibility.

Westbourne Academy, which became an academy in February 2013, was approached for comment on the Ofsted inspection.
