A key Ipswich road will be closed for over a month as planned gas works will take place involving the replacement of pipes built in the 1930s.

Clapgate Lane in south east Ipswich will close from Monday, July 29 to Monday, September 2 for works being carried out by Cadent.

The five-week works will involve replacing around a quarter of a mile of the old metallic pipe line.

A spokesman for the company said residents in Clapgate Lane, Frampton Road, Hossack Road, Rubens Road, Mildmay Road, Cotman Road and Boyton Road will be affected and will have to use diversion routes.

They added that there may also be times when the gas supply in the area will be interrupted.

Cadent say that installing the new gas pipe lines will help to future proof the local network for decades to come.

Project manager Gary Tidman added: “We have a responsibility to make sure every property that uses gas has access to a safe and reliable supply, 24/7, 365 days a year.

“This includes upgrading our pipelines, particularly those which are reaching the natural end of a long working life, like this pipe under Clapgate Lane.

“We know this is a busy road, so we have worked with Suffolk County Council to agree a week-by-week plan of work, and to keep the traffic management under review. We will always complete as quickly and as safely as we can."
