A church has chosen to go local by hiring an Ipswich firm to help them rebrand as Ipswich Minster.

St Mary Le Tower, a parish church in the town centre, will become Ipswich Minster from next year and has teamed up with local marketing firm, Against Ordinary, to help with its rebranding. 

It was announced earlier this year that St Mary Le Tower would be granted the title of Minster in 2025, after months of consultation with local leaders.

The title of Minster is honorific and is bestowed upon parish churches with extreme local and historical significance - there are only 31 other minsters in the UK. 

Rev Tom Mumford, Vicar at St Mary Le Tower, said choosing a local firm was important.

"In 200 years' time, when people look back in the history books, this will be in it.

"So it had to be a local company as far as I was concerned.

"This is the towns' church. It has held the people of the town's stories for centuries and so it had to be a local team helping tell those stories again."

Against Ordinary, which started in 2023, will take on the task of helping relaunch the prominent church as it becomes Ipswich Minster from 2025 onwards, designing new logos for the church and signage that will be feature around the church itself. 

Ipswich-based, Jordan Bambridge, co-founder of Against Ordinary, also highlighted the importance of choosing a team who understood the local community: 

"You need people who understand the nuances of the town.

"Our relationship with Tom is build on understanding the culture of Ipswich and what people care about.

"The presentation of everything we are trying to do will reflect that."

The company has also worked with other local organisations such as Cancer Support Suffolk.
