Network Rail prepares to shut crossing near Ipswich

Stennetts1 is on the East Suffolk line in the parish of Playford between Westerfield and Woodbridge stations.

It has been closed because Network Rail, which is responsible for the track and crossings, was concerned about people trespassing on to the line.

Nearby Stennetts2 crossing has been upgraded with warning lights telling walkers when a train is approaching.

The company says there is a diversion that will allow walkers from Strennetts1 to reach Stennetts2, but regular user John Shirley said this was pointless because the footpath has been a muddy bog for some time.

He said: "The alternative footpath on the north side takes the walker along a path which is waterlogged near the tunnel under the line and it is difficult to cross without waterproof footwear.

"They say that there have several incidents involving trespass and antisocial behaviour, but why should walkers be penalised?"

A spokesman for Network Rail said:  "Following a number of recent safety incidents, we have, in agreement with Suffolk County Council, decided to temporarily close the Stennetts1 level crossing located in Playford, Suffolk.

"The temporary closure is currently in place until January 2025. An existing nearby crossing has been upgraded with lights and an alarm to improve safety for crossing users, and can be accessed easily using alternative routes."

It is understood that while the crossing has been closed as a temporary measure, steps are being taken to make the closure permanent.

Suffolk County Council has a responsibility to ensure rights of way are passable. 

A spokeswoman said they would look into the access:  "Alternative pedestrian routes must be safe and fit for purpose whilst the closure is in place. We will review the route and see if alternative measures need to be considered."
