For four-year-old Hugo White, his first day at primary school will be particularly special.

The youngster, from Manningtree, was born with exomphalos, which meant his abdomen had not fully developed.

Hugo had the first of his five life-saving operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital when he was just a day old but was able to leave at 10 weeks. Now, Hugo is ready for his first day at Lawford CofE Primary School with his friends

Proud mum Nicola White said: “It’s very emotional seeing Hugo get ready for school. He’s really excited to be going and he loves his uniform and keeps asking to put it on!”

Hugo continued to be treated at GOSH, having a total of nine operations, and he finished his treatment and was discharged earlier this year.

Nicola added: “I’m so proud of him, it’s a massive moment for us and we’re so grateful to everyone at Great Ormond Street Hospital who did so much for Hugo and helped us get to today.”
