A college in Ipswich has been forced to stay closed today after a fire broke out on the grounds overnight. 

Fire crews were called to the incident at Suffolk One Sixth Form Centre in Scrivener Drive at 1.50am and engines from Ipswich East and Princes Street attended. 

A spokesman said crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

One Suffolk Sixth Form College announced the closure on Friday, March 15 following the advice of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. 

A statement on the college's website reads: "We are sorry to report that earlier this morning a small fire was detected at One.

"No one has been harmed, the fire has been extinguished, the damage is relatively minor, and it is contained within the area of the kitchen. However, due to implementation of the sprinkler system, a significant quantity of water was released into parts of the Turquoise zone.

"Therefore due to the need to refill the sprinkler tanks, the fire brigade has advised that we will need to close the college to students today."

Lessons have been cancelled but teaching is intended to resume on Monday, March 18.

Staff will be at the college to assist any students who are already on their way.
