A school football team has shown they are the best in the country after winning 7-0 in a final played at the home of Championship giants.

Holbrook Academy U13 boys team won the PlayStation Small Schools' Trophy after beating St Patrick's RC College from Stockton-on-Tees.

The match was played on May 24, with the players given a rare opportunity to play at The Hawthorns, the home of Championship side West Bromwich Albion.

Along their route to the final, they scored 46 goals across seven rounds before even reaching the final, defeating teams from Essex, Cambridge, London, Surrey as well as nearby Woodbridge School.

They also beat last year's winners St James Senior Boys' School from Ashford in Surrey, 12-0 in the semi final.

Kyle Messenger scored three goals earning himself man of the match, with goals also from Max Pook, Tommy McLoughlin and Freddie Ridgeon, who scored two.

Their coach and PE teacher, Mr Woods, spoke to the English Schools' Football Association after the match. He said: "I'm really proud of the boys.

"They've been absolutely brilliant all season from the very start when we began the journey to where we are now, what can I say, absolutely fantastic.

"It's a great end to a fantastic season. For a school based where we are in rural Ipswich, to come and play at The Hawthorns, it's like a dream come true for the boys so I am really please for them and this is memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

"Hopefully, we will try to win again next year."

Acting headteacher of the school, Frank Anstee-Perry said prior to the final: "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication that these young people have embodied on the pitch, the togetherness and quality of their coaching that has made this happen.

"We are immensely proud."
