For many, the food at the Suffolk Show is as much a draw as the animals – but what were our top picks this year?
You are guaranteed to eat well at the Suffolk Show, with the very best our region has to offer coming to sell their mouth-watering wares.
If you’ve got youngsters who need filling up, you can’t go wrong with a locally produced, sizzling hot sausage or burger.
If it’s sweet treats you’re looking for, you are equally spoilt for choice, with a vast array of baked goods, confectionery, and the show-stopping chocolate covered strawberries, a firm favourite which returned once more – and soon had a queue of eager customers.
It was good to see some familiar faces, such as The Chocolate Fondue Company and, of course, The Cheese and Pie Man.
There were also ample opportunities to try something new. One of our favourite stalls this year was Skinny Slabs, with owner Cathy Harratin manning the stall with her mum, Angela.
Skinny Slabs caught our eye because it proclaims to make healthy and delicious brownies – an intriguing idea, and one we were keen to put to the test.
Angela is key to the story of Skinny Slabs, explained Cathy, for she was looking to create tasty, sweet treat that would be suitable for her diabetic mother.
All the brownies are under 150 calories, she explained, and do not use any added butter or sugar. The brownies are made with black beans while the blondies are made with butter beans.
At Cathy’s recommendation, we tried a raspberry and white chocolate blondie.
Could you tell that this delicious treat was made with beans? Absolutely not! The blondie itself had that molten, cookie-dough texture that we all love, while the raspberry topping was, to use a phrase, the cherry on top.
We also enjoyed an absolutely colossal slab of Malteser rocky road from Bakeaholics. This too was to die for, sweet without being too sickly, and large enough that we needed to cut it in half and share.
