Residents have said they are "not surprised" by fights near where they live in the wake of six people being arrested following a dispute near the town's waterfront.
Two people were hospitalised following an incident on Sunday.
Officers were called at about 10.30pm on June 9 to reports of a fight involving a group of men near Duke Street, by Ipswich Waterfront.
Justin Read who lives in the area said: “This area is not on the up, but the councillors say it is.
"There is drug use and lots of alcohol but that’s just Ipswich in general now days. I’m not surprised.
“This shouldn’t happen especially when it’s near a university with young vulnerable people.
“But on Friday I did actually see two bobbies on the beat passing by. I haven’t seen that in years.”
Abi Knotts said she had seen a fight break out between a group of young people in Duke Street Car Park recently.
“It happens, I’m not surprised really,” she said.
Police have been making inquiries at the Travelodge which looks onto Duke Street.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said when officers arrived the group had dispersed.
A man in his 20s was located nearby, having suffered head and facial injuries.
He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he currently remains.
A teenage boy suffered an injury to his hand which also required treatment.
Police said he has since been discharged.
Officers arrested six people on suspicion of affray in connection with the incident.
They have all been taken to Martlesham police station for questioning.
Three police cordons were in place in the Duke Street area, but these have now all been lifted.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact South CID in Ipswich on 101, quoting reference: 32186/24.
