A hit musical has announced a further scheme to support the Ipswich community ahead of its arrival next month.

In an effort to combat homelessness, the Ipswich Regent Theatre and Come From Away are working together to support  Ipswich Housing Action Group (ihAg) during its upcoming run.

Come From Away tells the story of how a community supported 7,000 air passengers stranded in Canada post 9/11 and encourages community spirit and unity.

During the run, audience members are asked to generously donate food, beverages, toiletries, and clothing during the show's five-night run, from July 2 to July 6.

Ipswich Borough Council staff have also pledged to contribute donations.

Gavin Fisk, assistant director of housing and communities at Ipswich Borough Council, said: “In reflection of the brilliant real-life stories told through Come From Away, we hope the community will be inspired to join with us to help support homeless people in Ipswich."

Hannah Leys, assistant director of operations at Ipswich Borough Council, highlighted the significance of each donation.

She said: “If everybody coming to one of these shows can bring just one item each to donate this will make a huge difference over the five-night run of this show.”

The theatre has enlisted the help of blogger Lydia Greatrix, who said: Theatre isn’t just a fun night out, it can really make a difference in the world, and I can’t wait to help make a difference in Ipswich."

Jools Ramsey-Palmer, chief executive officer at ihAg, said: "This is a really exciting way to raise awareness of homelessness and show that collective action can make a significant difference to people’s lives."

A detailed list of requested donation items can be found on the ihAg website.

The show is also giving away free tickets to two community heroes to opening night.

Those wishing to nominate have until midnight on Sunday (June 23) to make an application for a neighbour who always lends a hand, a selfless volunteer or wishing to recognise someone who makes a difference in their community.

Tickets for the show can be procured at ipswichtheatres.co.uk.
