Cats found abandoned at a car park in Ipswich are in good health after being rescued by an animal charity.

A member of the public was emptying some items into a recycling bin in the car park when they heard cries coming from a cardboard box next to the bins.

Two black and white cats were inside the box.

The cats, who have been named Mittens and Luna, were taken to Blue Cross rehoming centre in Wherstead, on the outskirts of Ipswich.

Staff at the centre believe they are around one year old.

Clare Williamson, assistant manager at Blue Cross in Suffolk, said: "They were quite shut down when they first came into us but have been gaining confidence.

"We are now in the process of finding new homes for them but we just wish pet owners would take their pets to their local rehoming centres or animal hospitals if they can no longer look after them rather than abandon them.

"There is no shame in someone coming to us and saying they can no longer look after their pets. Our teams will happily help them find a new home for their pets.
