Ipswich Borough Council has said it is working to remove a number of travellers that pitched up in a park in the town.

At least six caravans were spotted in Gippeswyk Park, near the railway station, after arriving in the town on Friday evening.

A spokeswoman for Ipswich Borough Council said: "The council is taking all necessary steps to regain possession of the land.”

A family fun day at Gippeswyk Park was cancelled after the travellers pitched up at the site.

Lark in the Park, which is an annual family community day at Gippeswyk Park, was expected to take place on Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Organisers announced on social media on Saturday that the event was cancelled.

One woman told this newspaper she was "gutted" that the event had to be cancelled.
