Ipswich Town fans have expressed their excitement for the new Premier League season as the Blues kicked off their campaign against Liverpool.

Supporters gathered in huge numbers around Portman Road Stadium and pubs in the town centre on Saturday morning.

The game didn't go Town's way - Liverpool scored twice in the second half to claim victory - but supporters are thrilled to see what the season has in store.

Town were last in the the Premier League in 2002 and for loyal fan, Jack Ingleby and his son Oscar, the start of the campaign was a special day.

Mr Ingleby said: “I can just about remember when we were in it last time. So I’ve been waiting 22 years really. I can’t quite believe that it’s really here.

He added: “Of course, we want to stay up but what’s more important is that we enjoy it. We’re proud to be fans and go every week. I remember the days when it wasn’t as good as it is now."

Another fan, Peter Abbott, has also been hoping this day for a long time: “I’ve been waiting since 2002. I’ve been coming forever.

He added: “I’m excited. We’ve suffered being wet and windy with Yeovil at home or Gillingham at home and we’ve walked out thinking do we really want to come back and we did because that’s what we do."

Thomas Cornock, a fan who was only a one-year-old boy when Ipswich were last in the Premier League, said: “I’ve been waiting my whole life for this. I’m so happy it’s come around. The last few years have been surreal going up through the Championship."

Two fans from Essex, Martin Peck and his wife, Danielle, were also in town for the match.

Mr Peck said: “I’ve been waiting 22 years, I’m extremely happy we’re here.”

Mrs Peck added: “I just think people love Ipswich, it brings people together and you can see the amount of people that are out.”

Others are more anxious than excited, like plumber Steve Newby who said: "I’ve always been happy with whatever league Ipswich were playing in.”
