A new Lidl store in Ipswich has taken a step closer to opening as the fit-out process begins.
Building work on the new supermarket for the budget retailer began back in February at Anglia Retail Park in the north of Ipswich.
Now the shell of the building, which lies on the former B&Q garden centre site, has been handed over to Lidl by Ipswich Borough Assets to allow the fit-out process to begin.
Leader of Ipswich Borough Council Neil MacDonald said: "The opening of Lidl at Anglia Retail Park is a fantastic development for Ipswich, reflecting our commitment to economic growth and improving local amenities.
"This new store not only brings more choice and value to our residents but also creates job opportunities that will benefit the community. It’s a testament to the collaborative efforts of Ipswich Borough Council and our partners."
Last week, the signs for the new store were first spotted with the unit looking almost complete from the outside.
There were hopes that the shop would open in time for Christmas last year, but due to roof issues this opening was put on hold.
Colin Kreidewolf, chair of Ipswich Borough Assets, added: "We are delighted that the building works for Lidl’s new store has been completed on time.
"This development is a key addition to Anglia Retail Park and brings the prospect of 40 new jobs. We’re pleased to have played a role in bringing this project to fruition and growing the offering at Anglia Retail Park.”
Planning permission for the new supermarket was granted back in October 2022 by Ipswich Borough Council after the German retailer's proposal was first unveiled in 2021.
When the supermarket opens, it will be third Lidl located in Ipswich.
