Community leaders have said that they were "horrified" and "distressed" to hear about a serious sexual assault incident in Ipswich town centre.
While on patrol at about 3.50am on Sunday, police officers were approached by a woman who reported to them that she had been sexually assaulted by two men in St Stephen's Church Lane, by Arras Square.
Police have arrested two men in connection with the incident and were taken into custody for questioning as a police cordon was see in place on Sunday morning.
Councillors for the area have expressed their shock at the incident.
Rob Bridgeman represents Bridge at Suffolk County Council and expressed concerns over women's safety.
He said: "I'm horrified by this happening in our town centre as it should be safe for every female visiting at night sexual violence is a disgusting crime and we need to see stiffer sentencing and better prosecution rates.
"I'd also like to see safe walking routes introduced and more police patrolling on foot in the early hours.
"My thoughts go out to the lady involved and hope a prosecution will follow quickly."
Mr Bridgeman has previously advocated for other safety requirements, such as adding lighting to dark stretches of the waterfront.
His sentiments were shared by Ipswich Borough Council's portfolio holder for sports and communities, and representative for Alexandra, councillor John Cook.
He said: "I was distressed to hear reports of sexual assault in Arras Square.
"My thoughts are with the victim and her family. It is encouraging to hear that police responded promptly and that arrests have been made."
The pair of suspects arrested were taken to Martlesham police investigation centre for questioning.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said the victim is being supported by specially-trained officers.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Safeguarding Investigating Unit on 101, quoting crime reference number 49681/24.
