The organisers of a new mural festival in Ipswich said their new £100,000 project was "just the beginning" as it officially got underway.

Wild Walls, a new four-week street art and mural festival, began on Friday after more than a year of planning.

Throughout the summer, young people across the town joined workshops to design four large murals to reflect the spirit of the town and now we are seeing them come to life.

On Tuesday morning, residents woke up to a ladybug mural painted at the back of Ashton Legal's Ipswich office at Portman House.

Since then, various other colourful additions have been spotted around the town.

Artist Atma, who has begun crafting a mural at the University of Suffolk's James Hehir Building, said: "This is about reflecting the identity of the town and reflecting what Ipswich is all about. Ipswich is a beautiful town with so much history and beauty."

Creative Strategist Marcus Harris Noble, from Ipswich, added: "The beautiful thing about this project is it will lift people's day and make them feel good as they walk past. It's accessible to everyone and its inspiring.

"This is just the beginning. Watch this space, this is Wild Walls version 1.0, we will keep looking at how we can expand this and get even more people involved."

Iona Hodgson, co-director of Art East, added: "Around spring last year we put the application together for this and started the fundraising.

"What's really important here is that we pay our artists. We want to make art accessible to everyone, of all classes and backgrounds, so that is vital!

John Cavani, director of marketing and communications at the University of Suffolk, added: "Ipswich has a fantastic creative community and it's something we need to be more confident about. We really hope this project opens up more opportunities and we are really excited about it."
