A councillor in Ipswich has spoken of his long running battle to get something done about overgrown trees in an Ipswich street which residents fear are becoming dangerous.

The trees, situated in Queens Way, off Nacton Road in Ipswich, have grown so big that they can become "dangerous with falling branches".

Owen Bartholomew, Ipswich borough councillor for the Priory Heath Ward, has been trying to get something done about the trees since he was elected in May.

He said: "I was chatting to residents around Queens Way and they brought up the issue about the trees along there because they were getting overgrown.

"They were saying that they were getting dangerous because some of the dead branches were falling off, and some of them are hitting people's cars and just falling off generally.

"I did reports to Suffolk County Council and I have chased up a number of times to try and get it sorted and I've not really had a satisfactory response."

Cllr Batholomew and Lucy Smith, Suffolk county councillor for Priory Heath ward, have both been chasing highways for a response.

A statement from Suffolk Highways said: "Following a routine highway tree inspection, our arboriculturist confirmed that the trees were in a good condition.

"However, a Common Lime Tree on Queens Way has been recommended for maintenance such as the removal of the low or dead branches.

"We are currently awaiting further details before the work can be authorised to proceed."

Elsewhere in the town, residents have become concerned in the Stoke area of Ipswich, as verges are overgrowing and not being maintained, and public footpaths have become so overgrown that they are impassable.
