With the clock ticking ever closer to Halloween, what happens when a self confessed scaredy cat comes face to face with Trinity Scares?
Every year, the attraction sees friends and family walk through a number of scary experiences and mazes in complete darkness around Trinity Park.
By the time my friend and I arrived at the park at 7.30pm on Saturday night, darkness had fallen, and I was already nervous.
Full disclosure, she is a hardened horror movie buff and I am a self-confessed scaredy cat, so we hope to bring you a balanced view of how the night panned out.
The night began with us being locked in a stable-like building, trying to guess the code to let us out, while being leered at through the bars by zombies. So far, so good.
We were let out and made our way to the next barn, where we were crammed in a lift with six people we’d just met and shaken up and down like a cheerleader’s pom-pom. Arguably, my worst nightmare.
From there, the night got scarier and scarier.
It was a job to remember that the cast of zombies, clowns and scarecrows really were just actors – they have that creepy, jerky way of moving down to a fine art, easily making us jump out of our skins when they loomed suddenly from around corners as we crept through cemeteries, mazes and a bloodstained asylum.
They also clearly develop an instinct for weaklings. My heart was hammering when I was separated from the group as we made our way through a fairground and being forced to endure a teacup ride with an unblinking, Pennywise-esque companion an inch from my face, who gave me an appreciative sniff every now and then for good measure.
The whole trail took us around an hour and a half, by the end of which my legs were wobbling, with even my hardened friend admitting she had been scared.
Then came the next challenge, the caves. I can’t overstate this enough, if you are claustrophobic then this is a nightmarish ordeal.
Having to squeeze and wriggle through the tiny chain of tunnels (“the size of a bangle”, as my friend quipped) was for me the most genuinely terrifying part of the night.
By the time I emerged, I was shaking, sweating, and had contemplated a life in which I never made it out alive and was trapped in the caves forever.
Overall, I would highly recommend the experience to anyone looking for a good scare this Halloween. Until the big day arrives, I will be sleeping with the lights on.
Trinity Scares will be running until October 31.
