A former Ipswich Town star has settled a claim against the publisher of the Daily Mirror.

Kieron Dyer, who came through the Blues' academy, sued Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) in 2018 over allegations of unlawful information gathering used by journalists and the misuse of his private information between 1998 and 2011.

The 45-year-old cited 63 articles in support of his claim.

At a High Court hearing on Wednesday, Rebecca Finch, for Mr Dyer, said MGN admitted to some unlawful activity between 2003 and 2005 but denied the articles about the footballer were a result of the activity.

In a statement to the London court, Ms Finch said: "The claimant was upset at the time that the articles were published containing his private information.

"He found that as a result of the publication of the articles, his relationship with the public, colleagues, friends and family suffered and sometimes he 'lost their trust' and was not put in a positive light."

Ms Finch also noted there were times when Mr Dyer was followed by journalists and was "doorstepped at his home and approached on nights out on numerous occasions."

An agreement was reached in April this year to settle the claim when the publisher paid damages as well as Mr Dyer's legal costs.

Alex Pollock, who represented MGN, said: "The defendant is here today, through me, to offer its apologies to the claimant for the damage and distress caused to him by the misuse of his private information over a decade ago on the occasions noted.

"MGN accepts and acknowledges that the claimants private information should not have been obtained and used in the manner it was."

Mr Dyer played for the Blues' youth team before making his debut for the first team at 17 years old in 1996.

He gained 33 caps for England before managing Town's under-23s, a role he stepped down from in 2022.
