Cameron Humphreys’ first league start is a game the teenage midfielder will surely remember for the rest of his life.
The Ipswich Town youngster started the Blues’ 3-2 victory over Port Vale last night and capped an impressive 90 minutes with a superb goal as he fired through traffic to put his side two goals up.
Humphreys’ strike and Freddie Ladapo’s brace ultimately claimed the three points for Ipswich, on a night where the teenager was mobbed by his older team-mates and had his name sung by supporters at the final whistle.
“It means the world to me,” Humphreys said. “I’ve been at the club for many years and the reaction of the players and especially the travelling fans was amazing. The scenes were really pleasing for me.
“It’s a long way to come on a cold Tuesday night but they came in their numbers and sang all game.”
He continued: “It was a really good night good to get the three points and on a personal note, I’m very happy.
“There are bits where I can improve. Especially in the build-up, I could’ve been cleaner and better.
“In those times, I could be braver and play even more but there was a lot of bits I was happy with as well.
“I competed well and was good on second balls which is something I’ve tried to develop this year.“
Discussing his goal, Humphreys said: “It was just instinctive. Dom (Ball) has just flicked it away from the defender, I’ve come onto it and have just struck it sweetly.
“I don’t know if I’ve hit a ball that sweetly before, so what a time to do it. It went perfectly through the bodies and in.”
Humphreys also turned provider as he got to the byline and sent in the cross which eventually allowed Ladapo to turn home the winner.
“I’m going to try and claim the assist even though there were a few ricochets,” he said.
“It was a great pass from Leif to put me in, I saw Freddie at the back post. I don’t know how it got to him but we’ll take it.”
